Religious Display in a Government Building

The Everett Herald reported at Christmas 2008 about an anti-religion placard posted alongside Christmas displays in the Washington state capitol building. Here is what I wrote about the anti-religion placard:

Surely, reasonable Christians can understand that exercising freedom of religion by placing a Nativity scene in a government building might generate a counterpoint display by athiests exercising their freedom of religion viewpoint. Religious viewpoints are by nature contentious -- and constitutionally outside the scope of government's authority to validate. Instead of trying to obnoxiously claim preferential treatment by government, perhaps it would be more charitable and demonstrate humility if Christians graciously recognized that they don't have a monopoly on the truth -- that others whom they may not agree with have an equal right to access their government.
